5.0 out of 5 stars When Football Was Football, and Fulham was Fulham..!, 5 Sep 2011
This review is from: When Football Was Football: Fulham: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club (Hardcover)
This is a worthy book to grace the library or coffee table of any Fulham fan, whether they lived through the periods covered or want an intimate pictorial insight into the club up to the Keegan era.

Using many previously unpublished photographs, some whole or even double page spreads are enhanced with contemporary newspaper reports on the era or match illustrated.

The 208 pages cover the period from 1879 up to 1997, there are players profiles and statistics as well as some more intimate photographs of the players in training or behind the scenes, and of course some nice shots of the crowd (you never know, they could be a picture of your dad or grandad, mum or grandma and you as a kid!).

As we have come to expect (and yet to be disappointed) of Richard Allens' works, this is fun to read, informative and with the addition of so many wonderful photographs in black and white (naturally) and in colour, this is a treasure trove of era evocative photo's and written information that you will 'dip into' with pleasure for years to come...

5.0 out of 5 stars A proper footie book., 12 Sep 2011
This review is from: When Football Was Football: Fulham: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club (Hardcover)
WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL is a truly wonderful production.

Just enough text, good narrative, great lay-out and fantastic pictures.

A great football book for not only Fulham fans but all other football fans regardless.

A proper football book in its truest sense.

Highly recommended for any Fulham or indeed football fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tales from the Riverbank, 23 Nov 2011
This review is from: When Football Was Football: Fulham: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club (Hardcover)
How you could you fail to enjoy a celebration of London's oldest football club? Culled from the photo archives of the Daily Mirror and intelligently annotated, this highly pictorial history of the Cottagers should be a delight for any fan of the sport. From Fulham's 19th century origins, through the heydays of the 1950's and '60's, that cup run of 1975, a near-miss and near extinction in the 1980's and the threat of non-league football in the mid-'90's, right up to the brink of a return to top flight football at the beginning of the 21st century. It's a flippin' football fairytale, that's what it is! With Ernie Clay as the Wicked Stepmother, Mo Fayed as the Fairy Godmother and "Diddy" David Hamilton as Buttons; it's the perfect gift for Christmas. Oh yes it is, Cinders!

A Haynes manual for the intelligent football fan - me! ... and you?

P.S. I do like to think that a successful trajectory would have been maintained under Micky Adams; but, then again, "Shoulda, woulda, coulda are the last words of a fool", according to Beverley Knight & Craig Wiseman.

5.0 out of 5 stars When nostalgia is a good thing, 16 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: When Football Was Football: Fulham: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club (Hardcover)
There was a time when football books all looked the same. Fans would buy the books about players and clubs. But few outside the sport or the club would bother. Which is why the series of books 'When football was Football' is such a great find. The books cover the days when football was the fans game and not a business concern with fans almost forgotten.

The reason the book on Fulham stands out in this series is simply that nostalgia isn't always a good thing with this club. Great names and great photographs are used but other than the odd promotion and a cup final, only the characters and the fans stand out from a past that is actually dwarfed from the current success of the club. But so well does the text compliment the pictures that one can forget that these were actually not always the good old days. Fulham also still play at the ground they have played in for well over a hundred years. So the club always feels nostalgic anyway.

A modern or an old football fan. A Fulham fan or a Manchester United fan would do well to start with 'Fulham' as a good starting point in the series 'When football was football' If you have no idea what ties fans to clubs. This book will have all the questions answered.

Simply a great book about a club and its history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why we are Fulhamish, 3 Oct 2011
This review is from: When Football Was Football: Fulham: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the Club (Hardcover)
A wonderful record of this idiosyncratic club where the winning of trophies took second place to fun, camaraderie and entertainment. From the pioneers who got Fulham into the football league to the men who struggled to keep the club there nearly a hundred years later, we see how the footballing Gods gave us the supreme talents of Johnny Haynes alongside his best mate and fall guy Tosh Chamberlain. They also gave us our own word to describe such a state of affairs: Fulhamish. Richard Allen uses his knowledge and affection for both club and game to give us a sensitive presentation of Fulham's history. If you have any interest in the club, the characters and events which shaped it, then you should have this book.
