5.0 out of 5 stars The History of a Nation, as well its Football Team.
Really enjoyed Jimmy Burns' Barca book so I was keen to read La Roja as well. Similar to Barca the author is deft at knowing when to provide us with his own insights - and knowing when to let the fans, managers and players speak. The Spanish have the English to thank originally for giving them the game, but once embedded in the culture the History of Spanish Football has...

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit too much info.
well writen and easy to read but there is only so much history of Spainish football a normal football fan can take. He must take credit for the ammount of research done. But for the real, true Spainish football nerd only.

Interesting and thoroughly researched. Amazing insight in a fascinating political landscape. Excellently written and offers a real glimpse of Spanish football, including some interesting looks at history and how that affects the football.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 19 Jan. 2013

This review is from: La Roja: A Journey Through Spanish Football (Paperback)
This was a really interesting book showing how Spanish football has changed as the nation itself changed, from the Franco years to the modern era.Lots of interesting stories and personalities.I did hold back one star on this review as I felt a lot of clubs were skimmed over.Valencia/Deportivo La Coruna/Zaragoza and my beloved Real Mallorca (they had a great team in the late 90's honest !) barely mentioned despite a number of fine sides and honours between them. However,in fairness that is not really the aim of this book so cannot be held too much against it.Overall,a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting journey through Spanish football, 29 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this whilst on a recent trip to Valencia, in keeping with the Spanish theme of the weekend.
The writer does a great job describing the very British influenced birth of football in Spain, to the modern dominance of international football by the national team, via the influence the civil war had on some of the clubs. There are also interesting stories about some of the most influential players on La Liga over the years, both domestic and foreign.
If like me you enjoy the large amount of spanish football shown by sky sports, then this is a good read to see how it all started, and learn that it was not an easy journey from essentially poverty and humbling footballing lessons, to the pinnacle of the game where spanish football sits now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and interesting, 14 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good historical overview of the evolution of Spanish football from its introduction to Spain by British mining company managers in the 19th century to the recent success of La Roja in the European Championships and 2010 World Cup. The analysis of the impacts and legacy of the Spanish Civil War is particularly good. Well written by an author who clearly knows his subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Historic context, 11 April 2013
Really good read in respect to the history of both Spain as a country as week as its football. Also helps understand the historic rivalrly that exists today and just between the giants of the Spanish game

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Burns, 22 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jimmy Burns is a knowledgable and informative writer, particularly on the subject of Spanish football. La Roja follows the national team with a passionate and in-depth history that any football fan would enjoy. Follow the ups and downs of Spanish football and how it reflects internationally, from the early years of Bilbao's domination to the La Furia style, through the Franco years to the present day, where the duopoly of Madrid and Barcelona dominate domestically and with representation in the national team.

Burns writes with a feel for his subject and I recommend this book, along with 'Barca: A People's passion' and 'Maradona: The Hand of God' for anyone who is fascinated with the history and culture of football.

5.0 out of 5 stars The great Real Madrid Barca divide, 4 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great insight into the football and the politics of Spain. The way in which the ( broadly ) monarchist Real and the ( broadly ) republican Barca have exemplified political tensions in Spain is fascinating

A bit over-long but a good summary of the relationship of football to wider Spanish history. Vital if you want to live or do business in Spain but also good sports history too
