5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Out of sync.
First let me assure you that this is probably the most readable account of the first world war in the air that I have ever had the pleasure to find.

Biggles it isn't !

However, it is a great deal more accurate to how it must have been.

The writing is up to Mr Robinsons usual excellent standard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but somehow could not get into the story.
This book really in my opinion dealt with the behaviour of new and battle weary flyers in the first world war. But somehow I began to loose interest half way through, never the less absorbing.

First let me assure you that this is probably the most readable account of the first world war in the air that I have ever had the pleasure to find.

Biggles it isn't !

However, it is a great deal more accurate to how it must have been.

The writing is up to Mr Robinsons usual excellent standard.

If, however, you want to get the best from the book and to begin to understand the mindset of the lead player ( Major Stanley Woolley ) you should first buy a copy of the other two books in what is effectivly a trilogy.

Begin with " War Story " and move on to " Hornets sting "

There is no doubt at all that the Goshawk Squadron cast will entertain, enthrall and sometimes surprise you, but be prepared to be moved by the finale !

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good read, 25 Feb 2013

Faction put in a very readable way. The weaving of fact with fiction is delightfully done, even though some of the factual stuff might have been slightly 'adjusted' to fit the story

You can tell its Derek Robinson, as it could have been Piece of Cake if you changed the dates and aircraft ... but then the disaster of WW1 and the bravery or sheer insanity of the front line forces comes through ... wow.

Well written and although fiction gave a good insight into WW1 on an RFC airfield, at times even made me laugh at the madness that was WW1.

...drily humorous, occasionally sad, frequently slightly controversial, always well written. Not his best ever, but certainly not a bad book.

Very good end to the trilogy. At times went a little over the top with his cynical outlook but overall a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good bookmby this writer, 28 Aug 2013

This is another excellent read , dealing with horrors of first World War and the early flyers. True to the authors style, heroes do not always win through or survive, it really keeps you interested from start to finish and brings the awful conditions suffered in that war to life.
