This review is from: John Piper: The Forties (Paperback)
This splendid picture book delivers a useful overview of Piper's working life and artistic development from the late 1930s through the war years. The illustrations are lavish in what is a superbly designed publication on Britain's pre-eminent recorder of Blitzed historic buildings - image by image, the book ably shows how Piper attempted to infuse figurative pictures with modernist values.

With handsome reproductions of what were hailed at the time as major works, and an even spread of his production (design work including theatre sets and costumes are included), the reader can see how the artist's work evolved over these crucial years when he was ranked as one of the foremost contemporary artists in Britain. The selection, number, size and quality of colour illustrations is superb and make this publication an essential addition to any library covering English art in mid century - it is the visual reference needed by readers of Frances Spalding's thinly illustrated, if otherwise weighty biography John Piper, Myfanwy Piper: Lives in Art!

(This book is a companion work to Eric Ravilious: Imagined Realities.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful publication, 8 Jan 2014

This review is from: John Piper: The Forties (Paperback)
A lavishly illustrated book with informative text about the artist and his works. I'm delighted with it (a late Christmas present) and have been poring over it since it arrived this morning. I particularly enjoy Piper's haunting painting of buildings with their fascinating assembly of slabs of light and surprising colour. The images of blitzed churches are eerily atmospheric and lift the squalor of man-made destruction into something beautiful and unforgettable (the paintings of the ruins of Coventry Cathedral are particularly moving).

John Piper was surely a genius.....Wonderful draughtsmanship, observational skills and imaginative presentation of his subjects........Highly specialized for England's landmarks, churches.............Diverse abilities but not as modern as Prunella Clough
