5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for beginners, 19 Feb. 2002

Janis (Kyalami, Gauteng South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Embroidery Techniques (Paperback)
This book contains all you need to know upon starting embroidery.
The first section covers the basics of materials, needles, and threads, and the following chapters show both illustrations and photographs of every stitch you may have heard of, and then some - to give you an idea both of how to perform the stitch, and what the finished stitch actually looks like. (Which I found extremely useful.)
There are inspiring sections on more advanced features for finished projects, such as the use of modelling clay, beads, metallic threads, and machining, as well as how to achieve certain looks and feels for more effective final products.
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs an idea of how to start - it gives a solid foundation from which to go ahead and create your own masterpieces.

4.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring guide to all types ofembroidery, 11 Feb. 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Embroidery Techniques (Paperback)
This is an excellent guide for both beginners and experienced embroiderers. The book is split into chapters covering a particular type of embroidery including metal thread and applique. Different stiches are described and illustrated and information on fabrics, threads and needles is given. The book then concludes with a sumptous gallery of different works on a series of themes (eg landscape, flowers) which is both inspiring and rather daunting. The book is excellent if you want inspiration and to learn different stiches with a view to trying your own designs, however it does not contain step-by-step instructions for many finished projects which can be frustrating for beginners.
