This review is from: The Malta Railway (Paperback)
This is a very interesting book on the railways of Malta, all 7 ½ miles of them, which opened in 1883, and closed in1931. It is recommended for anyone interested in the history of minor and/or overseas railways. This edition is 120 pages, with many excellent photographs, drawings, maps and diagrams in the text. It is the second edition of 2004, published by the Oakwood Press, a specialist publisher of transport history books, and is No. X020 in their general catalogue. The first edition was published in 1970.

The Contents are –
P005: Early Days
P017: The Line from Valletta to Museum
P057: The Running of the Railway
P069: The Locomotives and Rolling Stock
P095: The Workshops
P099: Competition and Closure
P102: Appendices (x4)
P117: Sources and Bibliography

5.0 out of 5 stars Industrial Archaeology without tears., 4 Mar. 2013

It should be no secret that the Maltese archipelago has many layers of history, reaching back at least 4000 years. My wife and I visit the island every year, same time (January), same hotel, which has allowed a circle of friends to develop. This year's newcomers (to us) were a couple who had an interest in the Malta railway, so, being a railway buff myself, I (we!) joined in. He had a 'working' copy of this book, which I inspected while on holiday.
The book is thorough, though like a lot af books of this sort, it dates rather quickly. This gives the reader an opportunity to spot changes, improve on detail, and begin to "own" a part of an investigation. As a record of the work of several men, it is now part of the archaeology itself, as many of the features examined in the book are disappearing under modern development.
For holiday makers in Malta looking for something different, i.e. not the 1565 Siege, and not WWII, it has promise. The book is an invaluable guide on such a journey.

Having been to Malta several times I found this book fascinating. There is not much left of the Malta Railway but this volume will tell you where you can find the remaining items. Period photographs have been chosen which add interest and 'flesh out' the story.

i found the Railway story of Malta very interesting. What a great pity that so few are interested in restoring part of their transport history.

Interesting insight into this long lost railway.
Still some evidence of it to be seen, but what a tourist magnet if some of of it was still there!
