This review is from: Hard Times: Social Realism in Victorian Art - Exhibition Catalogue (Paperback)
Hard Times is an essential point of reference for anyone studying social realism in 19th century British Art. The issues of poverty, starvation, disease and vice in an artistic context are dealt with succinctly by Treuherz in this compendium spanning lesser-known artists such as Redgrave through to the Pre-Raphaelites and Dickensian illustrators such as Phiz and Marcus Stone.
It is refreshing to see a book that champions the socially-motivated side of 19th century (and indeed Pre-Raphaelite) art, and throughout Treuherz links together the cultural and historical influences on Victorian socially realist art in a way that is both meticulous and engaging. However, as an exhibition catalogue, it is not especially meaty on any particular work and if this book is required for academic purposes, some more substantial, in-depth offering will be needed. But for an overview of the trends in 19th century socio-political Art, this book is ideal, not least because it makes reference to some rare works which one might not otherwise come accross.

THis is terrific for anyone wanting to know more about this imortant movement in British Art. It is more useful information than most specialist textbooks, plenty of illustrations and gives a full and fascinating account of the major aspects of Social Realist painting. Highy recommend it.
