For generations, young and old have enjoyed the "You are the Ref". It is as much part of the football fan's life as Shoot magazine, Match of the Day, disappointing World Cup campaigns and dodgy refereeing decisions....or are they?????

Some of these have now gone, some are mere shadows of nostalgic dreams, but "You are the Ref" continues its basic quest:
1) Here is what happened
2) What Decision would you Give?
3) Are you Correct?

The Answers are given by Former FIFA Ref Keith Hackett, the Questions are illustrated by the Master Trevillion using current star players and coaches as well as the Legends of former years.

There are additional background chapters on the Laws of the Game; the roles, duties and demands on the match Officials and even a chapter on how to "Draw like Trevillion" - as if it were that easy.

What I like about this book is that the authors have kept what is good and added items that get you thinking. It is for the current fan, the nostalgic romantic, and can be shared and enjoyed by all ages.

I'm really impressed with this, the illustrations by Paul Trevillion of Roy of the Rovers/Tiger & Scorcher fame really take you back to your childhood days.

The hardback book is well presented with Keith Hackett answering the refereeing conundra which arise in illustrated game situations with 3 possible solutions. You pick your solution and check it against the correct answer which contains a detailed explaination of why the correct answer is correct.

The book is arranged in sections such as You are the Ref, Laws of the Game, Official Signals, Becoming a Referee and Drawing Like Trevillion. The You are the Ref section covers almost 100 pages with each page containing either 2 refereeing dilemmas or one dilemma and an illustrated player profile. The use of real players in some of the situations is a nice touch, and Hackett lends authority to the decisions.

I think that this is a great book for anyone from the age of 9 or 10 upwards, the younger kids who are learning about football will find it interesting and the older kids who are taking the game a bit more seriously and want to learn more about the laws of the game will find it very useful. Of course, anyone considering becoming a ref, and teenagers can pick up a fair sum doing it, will find this book entertaining and enlightening.

Great book for anyone interested in football - 5 stars!

My son, who is almost middle aged, really appreciated this present. He loves the tricky questions and thinks the illustrations are marvelous in themselves. You are the Ref: The Ultimate Illustrated Guide to the Laws of Football

As a football novice who thought the rules were simple (whoever scores the most goals wins- that's about it, isn't it?),I found out there is an awful lot that the ref has to think about! Lots of great sketches and player profiles, as well as great comic-strip Q&A showing a possible scenario and asking "what would you do?" if you were the referee. As a clueless newcomer to concepts of player position and general footballing terms this is so clear and easy to understand due to the little sketches showing where players are or what has happened (I wouldn't have a clue if this was all written in text to explain the rules). The text is also very concise and often witty making it great fun to read and try to work out the answers (all of these are provided in on the same page, but you need to turn the book upside down to read them; helps avoid cheating but can be tiring on the arms if reading in bed!). A very small criticism would be that the text is on the small side in the Q&A - definitely need my specs, however it means more can be crammed into this A4 size book which has lovely thick pages and is great quality. You know you HAVE to order it now...

This book lived up to my expectations having read the column in the Sunday newspaper. Informative and entertaining. Highly recommended.

I bought this in the hope it would cure him of the naive notion that he might want to become a referee some day. Whether it has succeeded or not, time only will tell. What I do know, is that he has read the book cover to cover and loves nothing better than torturing his uncle by subjecting him to one of the posers; an ordeal that his uncle invariably fails.

The rules of football are not what people think they are.

If you\re ordering this book, you're a fan of the strip.

If you're a fan of the strip, you'll love it.

If you're not a fan, you will be by the time you've got 6 pages in.
