5.0 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone interested in the genre of WW1, 5 Feb 2002
This review is from: Sassoon and Graves: On the Trail of the Poets of the Great War (Battleground Europe: On the trail of the poets of the Great War) (Paperback)
A highly readable account of the relationship between two of the most charismatic poet/soldiers of the First World War. Anyone with an interest in the history of the war and the writings that emerged will find this a fascinating book.
Graves & Sassoon gives important additional information as to incidents and the whereabouts of the two poets both in the trenches in France and back home in England on leave. The fascination of these WW1 poets careers along with Captain J C Dunn, Bernard Adams and the old soldier himself Frank Richards serving in the Royal Welch Fusiliers gives the avid reader a trail of immense reading to follow. Graves & Sassoon is a story and a guide, incidents and anecdotes along with pen portraits of different characters are given at length along with directions to various sites where the two men served in France during hostilities. The homes and early lives are discussed of the poets in England, Graves home at Harlech "Erinfa" and Sassoon's "Weirleigh" in Kent are of particular interest.
Graves & Sassoon like many others were members of the brave officer class who led by example as detailed in this book, taking patrol's out in to no-man's land to gather information and probe enemy defenses. They were both wounded in different attacks and suffered greatly along with many of their men as a consequence of their actions. This is a book I could have done with during my teens when first reading "In Flanders Fields" by Leon Wolff which started me off on the WW1 trail of knowledge. I have read many of the interesting books mentioned in Graves &Sassoon and this one will accompany me to France when I visit the war sites. I am sure many enthusiasts will feel the same and take great pleasure in reading this fine book.
