3.0 out of 5 stars Delville revisited
One of a well-received series, this is another welcome addition
to the Battlefield Europe series and can only enhance a Somme visit. Both German and British accounts of the July/August 16 battles are included, the former drawing upon the already published work of Ian Uys - known to many battlefield tourers.

A very good book, describing the horrors of warfare in vivid detail. Well worth a read by anyone interested in world war one.

I bought this as my Grandfather served in WWI and was at Delville Wood. It is amazing looking at the photos in the book to see the wood destroyed and how it looks now which is beautiful and quiet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Delville revisited, 24 Nov 2002
This review is from: Deville Wood: Somme (Battleground Europe) (Paperback)
One of a well-received series, this is another welcome addition
to the Battlefield Europe series and can only enhance a Somme visit. Both German and British accounts of the July/August 16 battles are included, the former drawing upon the already published work of Ian Uys - known to many battlefield tourers.
Its all here: material drawn from official sources, personal accounts and most importantly, notes on how to appreciate the battlefield as it is today.
The only negative note is struck when the text is invaded by Mr Cave's somewhat reactionary ideology. Normally his pro Haig rant
is sidelined to the Battleground Europe series intros. On visiting the Somme and finding oneself surrounded by the results of Haig's generalship, its hard to conclude Mr Cave's hero was equal to the task. For me, and I suspect for most of the readership, he will remain 'Butcher Haig'
