This review is from: William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, a Life: Victor of Culloden (Hardcover)
This is the first full length biography of the Duke since that of 1767, and the author, a former soldier, covers the subject in a concise and sympathetic fashion. Not for him attempts at amateur psychology or theories about the Duke's personal life, but a sensible account of a crucial personality of eighteenth century history. The figure who emerges from these pages is far removed from the ogre of Jacobite propaganda, which will doubtless prove an annoyance to its latter day adherents. Arguably the author could have covered the Duke's role in the period after Culloden in more detail. It is well illustrated, indexed and sourced and should be read not only by those interested in the Duke or the '45, but also anyone concerned with eighteenth century British military or political history, both of which the Duke left his imprint on.
