2.0 out of 5 stars First disappointment form Connie Mason
This was the first book of Connie Mason's I didn't enjoy reading. It just feels like she wanted to pack as much action as possible in the story, leaving much to be desired. The 'action' stories are not well thought through, the author doesn't spend much time in developing them.

Two years after the civil war, Shannon Branigan's family were forced to sell their plantation to a Yankee. Shannon's father had commited suicide. The rest of her family had left, she had stayed behind to accompany her elderly Aunt. But then when her Aunt suddenly died Shannon was left alone. Shannon manages to persuade the wagon train manager to allow her to travel with a young married couple who are expecting their first child. The scout for the wagon train is against Shannon joining as she is young single and very beautiful. He felt that her presence would cause trouble amongst the young men. Swift Blade the scout was a half breed, tall muscular and handsome, he caused a stir wherever he went. Women covertly eyed him with longing, while publicly denouncing him as a half breed savage. Shannon's beauty was not unnoticed by the men, including Swift Blade. Although Shannon thought him handsome she could not get over her anger at his objection to her travelling with them.
.
This is a sprawling story covering Shannon and Swift Blade's growing relationship, it begins with the journey on the wagon train and beyond. Many adventures and mysteries happen along the way. Swift Blade has his secrets about his real reason for travelling and working as a scout. Shannon proves to be a distraction one that he can ill afford. But the chemistry and sexual tension between them is too strong. Shannon is only eighteen but has been through much and is wise beyond her years, but she has an Irish temper, that when she is provoked is red hot.

This is a first read for me by this author and I really enjoyed this. The writing is descriptive and flowing. A lot happens in this book, the reader is drawn into the characters lives and experiences everything along with them. There are a supporting cast who play their part in this very well, some are good people while others are only out for themselves and to do harm. The author has obviously researched this period as the details are impressive. I loved this and am going to read A Promise of Thunder which is the sequel to this book. One thing I would like to mention is this author certainly likes her love scenes they are plentiful and explicit. So if that's not your thing maybe this won't be for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Passion and aventure, 9 April 2014

Blade and Shannon. He s half breed Union Major who has been paid to escort her to her uncle whom is making a study of an Indian race. Love- making a little too much for me considering her spinsterish ways. But still a good read.

The amount of love scenes is ENORMOUS! The main story between Blade and Shannon is not very developed either - I would have like more background rather then action, bed scene, action, bed scene, action, etc etc...
Blade's character is pathetic in some point... The author just tells you about his qualities, rather than showing the through his actions...In some scenes he is overly sensitive (!!!) and I ended up rolling my eyes during few scenes...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 18 May 2013

I haven't read Ms Mason books in years, namely that I felt that her romances were a bit to sweet and tame for the modern woman. My opinion, after reading this book, has changed! This book is full of passion, sexy moments and a wonderful hero named "Blade". Other reviews cover this book well, so I won't bother. What I would say is that I have never read so many things happening to one couple, just when I thought everything would be OK, then something else horribly happened! Racial intolerance is never acceptable and I felt so much heartache for Blade especially when he thinks himself as only a Breed and could never be good enough for our heroine, it made my heart weep! Recommended.
