5.0 out of 5 stars Very good synopsis, 12 Aug 2006

This review is from: Gospel Parallels, A Comparison of the Synoptic Gospels: New Revised Standard Version Gospel Parallels (Hardcover)
This is a classic synopsis, using the English (NRSV) text of the first three canonical gospels. The layout is great, the print clear and legible. Excellent for close reading of the gospel texts in the usual parallel columns (Mt, Mk, Lk). Where doublets or similar phenomena occur, both texts from the same gospel are listed side by side (for example, Mt 5:31-32 has Mt 19:9, Mk 10:11-12 and Lk 16:18 in parallel columns). Of course, the good print size means that the fourth gospel had to be left out. Mostly that is not a problem, but of course in some instances it is useful to have it. Still, at least the references to Jn are offered, so one can go look it up. Also helpful are smaller texts printed at the bottom of the page, offering useful extra-canonical material where appropriate (Gospel of Thomas, Didache, etc.). On the whole: a must-have for the serious study of the gospels, certainly for anyone who does academic theology. Of course, if you are REALLY serious, you would need to read a Greek synopsis, but that is another story...

This review is from: Gospel Parallels, A Comparison of the Synoptic Gospels: New Revised Standard Version Gospel Parallels (Hardcover)
This book sets out what each Gospel says on a particular subject in parallel columns on A4 pages in paper-covered hardback binding; it follows the order in each Gospel so some passages occur two or three times. It is an essential reference work for anyone who wants to understand or expound the message of the Gospels. The differences may be small, but it is stimulating to ask why each of the evangelists omitted or added a few words to their common source. I have been using the predecessors of this book for forty years, and am delighted to have the latest edition; I wouldn't be without it for writing and preaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comments on Gospel Parallels, 27 Oct 2011

This book is invaluable both for private reading and for preparing and using in group Bible studies. The motivations and concerns of the authors in writing for their target recipients becomes immediately apparent, which explains why they stress different aspects of the same incidents in their accounts. Being easily able to compare them adds richness and depth to the gospel narratives.

Bible: New Revised Standard Version Gospel Parallels is an outstanding Bible. The first three Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke are placed side by side so that the stories and words can be compared.

Using this Bible it is amazing how much of Mark - Matthew used. While I knew that from my studies seeing the text side by side have helped.

This Bible is in my consent use and I recommend it highly.
