2.0 out of 5 stars Not a spiritual journey, 17 Oct 2013
This review is from: Nicholas and Helena Roerich: The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists and Peacemakers (Paperback)
For years I have been fascinated by Roerich's paintings and his (sometimes frustratingly) tantalizing writings, and there is no denying his influence on various world institutions. Having seen his inspirational works in context at his former home in the Himalayas, I had high hopes for this book. I was very disappointed.
The book is a sequential catalogue of what happened but, confusingly, without enough dates to be sure of what is going on. More importantly, the whys and wherefores are hardly examined at all - just vague, glib and unexplained statements that "the Masters" directed it all. I get the impression that the author is attributing her own beliefs to the Roerichs and assuming everyone else shares them. She seems breathlessly gushing at how marvellous the Roerichs' work was, listing the names of other people involved (often without explaining who they were), but has very little insight into the Roerichs' own motives and inspiration - and certainly does not give a satisfyingly adequate account of their spritual life. Jacqueline Decter's book on Roerich's art is much more informative.
