4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty book, but could be more useful
This is a very restrained book, a series of black and white photos of completed joints, with short descriptions of each. It's a popular introductory text, and deservedly so.

This is a very restrained book, a series of black and white photos of completed joints, with short descriptions of each. It's a popular introductory text, and deservedly so.
There are two limitations in this book, perhaps surpassed by more recent books such as "The Complete Japanese Joinery". There's no description of how to choose these joints, and where they might approriately be used. More seriously, there's no description of how to lay them out, or their traditional proportions.
Still worth having.

3.0 out of 5 stars The usual suspects, in an old-fashioned layout, 6 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Art of Japanese Joinery (Paperback)
This is a very old fashioned book, first printed in 1970, and it shows. The photographs of joints are black and white, and separated from the text about them. The context seems to be the building trade, rather than furniture making, though naturally some of the joints can be used in both. If you're looking for a book on traditional Japanese building construction then it falls short, too. All but one of the joints are binary ones; 'The Complete Japanese Joinery' would be a much better buy for builders.

This book has no index.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a big deal, but worthy, 3 May 2012

It's not the best book ever, not even closer, but it has a very interesting text with it. It's more like a history book than a woodworking one. Woth having, but for the practical woodworker there are better ones out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh My God, 16 Dec. 2011
This review is from: The Art of Japanese Joinery (Paperback)
Practically pornographic photos and nice heart warming text too. Its a story as much as a respect for wood and skill. If the world thought about time well spent instead of spending lots of money on saving time - like applying a skill like this - we'd be surrounded by wonderful buildings.

Time IS Art, and this Book helps the reader realise this. Excellent learning material.

3.0 out of 5 stars More art than craft, 19 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Art of Japanese Joinery (Paperback)
This is more about the aesthetics of the joint and leans more on photos of them as something visual. It is not for the practical carpenter wishing to make them or wanting to know where to use them. If you have The Complete Japanese Joinery, this won't add anything to what's in there. If you want to make them, get The Complete Japanese Joinery. If you want a nice looking book with very nice (b&w) photographs and are more interested in the aesthetics of the joints, then buy this book.

Amazing book.
Recommend to anyone interested in Japanese culture and their carpentry.
Pure b/w photography, philosophy and use, but not that technical.
