She misses lots of opportunities to offer insights and draw out possible implications of the text -- perhaps because she seems obsessed with repeating her thesis that Esther is totally fictional rubbish.

This review is from: Esther (JPS Bible Commentary) (JPS Bible Commentary Series) (Hardcover)
This commentary is part of a new series that fills the large gap between the usual superficial Bible commentaries and more advanced works like the International Critical Commentary and Hermeneia series. It provides a lot of solid information in a large, well produced volume but without overwhelming technicalities. Helpfully (for those who can read it) the Hebrew text is printed in full. It assumes that Esther has no historical basis for its plot - on the contrary, it is a comic novel - although the background details are confirmed by modern archaeology. It is not light reading in any sense (physically it is a heavy book), but reading it will teach you a lot about the Book of Esther in particular and the whole area of Bible studies.
