Anyone wishing to better understand the Psalms will welcome this book. Following an extensive Introduction, where Eaton provides background material about the Psalms in general, he then treats each psalm to his own translation, gives a brief introduction, a detailed commentary and then concluding remarks with a closing prayer. In dealing with individual Psalms Eaton never loses sight of the context of the Psalm within the complete Psalter. The book manages to combine the place of the Psalms in history and their place in, and meaning for, today's world in a vivid and extremely interesting way. It is a book which is very easy for the general reader to follow while at the same time providing for the more advanced student.

This book is worth buying just for the introduction alone. That certainly made me see the Psalms in a new light. However there is more. The commentary on each Psalm is reasonably short, typically a couple of pages. It is an ideal 'companion' for daily-reading, for example.

I think Vassar's conclusion to his review (RBL 02/2007): "This is a clearly written work and offers much assistance for the reader as a concise, straightforward commentary on the text" is spot on.

Eaton's excellent book has a section covering the background to the Psalms. The main part of the book has a section for each psalm, which is printed in full followed by an explanation. A learned book which has helped me in my studies - and if you are only buying one book on the Psalms, this should probably be it. It is printed on quality paper, with reasonable size print, beautifully laid out.
