4.0 out of 5 stars A Breakthrough for Christians
A very important book for Christians whose inner developement has become stuck. Here, the history of prayer is really illuminating, explaining why it is observable that so many in the church seem stuck spiritually for historical reasons. A very important book for Christians whose inner developement has become stuck. Here, the history of prayer is really illuminating, explaining why it is observable that so many in the church seem stuck spiritually for historical reasons. Simple contemplation, available to all christians for 1500 years has not been taught for about 500 years, which seems tragic, but here there is given a gentle introduction, making straight, simple and direct practice possible for all who live active lives in the world. Strongly interested in Christianity for 50 years, I have used a well taught, traditional eastern meditation for 40 years with plenty of spiritual instruction, but this is the first book on prayer that I have found to come up to similar standards, recognisable fron experience, but from within the Christian tradition. This is reassuring for those who feel they cannot venture outside. Father Keating, Cistercian Abbot, has in my view supplied a practical and deeply Christian way forward for many in deep spiritual need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!, 12 April 1998

This review is from: Open Mind, Open Heart: Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel (Paperback)
Thomas Keating's careful and articulate manner of walking people through the process of Centering Prayer in this book is worthwhile reading. Further, it can change one's life if open to the possibilities of inner transformation and change. Keating gives the reader a tremendous amount of hope that this life may indeed be lived in the fullness of deep Peace and divine Love through the daily intention of the practice of Centering prayer. It is a book that can transcend cultural and religious boundaries into the realm of deep faith if the reader enters into the heart of the book with an open heart and open mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful way to contemplation., 14 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Open Mind, Open Heart: Contemplative Dimension of the Gospel (Paperback)
This book presents another helpful approach to contemplation in clear steps. Like other ways, only practice, practice, and more practice will bring about fruitful results. I wonder if having more then one approach to contemplation should be the norm, so I would suggest that this book complements other books suggesting other ways of contemplation, such as using 'the Jesus Prayer', for example.
