Dr Rachel Laudan traces the history of Polynesian food but also adds a huge amount of research and interst into other areas. Very readable, this prize-winning book should be compulsory reading for all historians, ethnologists and food writers. Not a recipe book, it nonetheless puts the current crop of media potboilers to utter shame. I am informed that Dr Laudan is nearing completion of a book on the world history of food from palaeolithic times until the present day. It will be an epic unlike anything else ever attempted. I can't wait.
