This review is from: The Varieties of Vernacular Mysticism: 1350-1550 (Presence of God: A History of Western Christian Mysticism) (Hardcover)
Like other students of the Western Mystical Tradition I have been awaiting the arrival of Volume 5 of this magisterial survey for some time. It is clear that as this project has developed, so has the detail of the investigation and hence the series will (at present) now run to 7 volumes. This volume is a fascinating offering bringing together Ruusbroec, Catherine of Siena, Richard Rolle and Julian of Norwich in one volume and as one might expect does not disappoint.

The Spanish Carmelites and the French School will presumably be next up and are eagerly awaited. The final volume, which aims to deal with the 'Crisis and Renewal in Western Mysticism' throughout the period of Modernity, looks set to give Professor McGinn's perspective on ground that is not well covered elsewhere.
