This book has a serious printing fault.Almost all of the illustrations are orange, for instance orange bananas, orange snow, and orange sky. This shows very poor
quality control in the printing process. If you like a gamble, order one, you may be lucky and get one that has been properly printed.I did not, and have returned my copy.Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner:...

"Oil Painting For the Serious Beginner" is not for beginners only, as the title might imply. The text is rich with thoughtful instruction, anectdotal stories and just plain good advice. Whatever painting level you find yourself at, there is enough practical guidance and insightful discussion on the art of making a painting "work" to keep you challenged. Author/painter Steve Allrich is clearly in love with the process of oil painting, and his passion for this subtle art is infectious. Be inspired, be heartened, be provoked. I was, and continue to be!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, insightful and inspiring, 27 Oct. 1998
By A Customer
Whether you consider yourself a serious beginner, or quite an accomplished painter, there is much to be gleaned from this marvelous volume. Steve Allrich is a smashing painter, with a no nonsense approach to his writing...a bit reminiscent of David Curtis and Trevor Chamberlain. If you are a fan of these artists, you are certain to appreciate this American plein-air painter. His work is fresh, the writing insightful, and the multiple color illustrations throughout the book are truly inspiring. A welcome change of scenery in the landscape of art instruction. Highly recommended.

This is a great book, and I second everything the other two reviewers said. However, my copy - which may have been faulty - had a problem with the illustrations. All the images have a very strong orange tint, making them less than helpful for use as aids and support to the text. I have contacted the publishers about this, and am waiting for a response.

This excellent book, as far as the author is concerned, is spoiled by the faulty reproduction of the paintings. I have always found Watson & Gupthill's books excellent in the past so this was a great disappointment. Fortunately the price of my copy made this purchase worthwhile!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND THE WISDOM WITHIN IT!, 9 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter (Paperback)
I love the book and the excellent Wisdom and direction within it, only disappointment is the distorted colour of the images inside (orange colour dominance) I assume this is due to bad printing!!

But it does not matter much to me as the text is the most invaluable information that I needed, I know the colour names and how they look like I don't need a picture to show me as well, although it would be nice for the beginners in order to get the hang of the instructions within the book! And to see the paintings done by the author!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good content, odd printing, 14 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner: Basic Lessons in Becoming a Good Painter (Paperback)
I read the reviews of this book before I bought it. I was looking for a book that would teach me some of the basics of oil painting and this book does that. The author's approach is not that of some other oil painters in that he generally works wet in wet so it is an interesting take on the medium. It gives lots of useful detail about preparation and materials. It also gives lots of art theory. I've done some painting already but I found his ideas on eg composition very useful. As other reviewers of this book mentioned, the printing colour seems to be yellow. However I did wonder if some of the paintings really did have a yellow tone as the author states that he often tones his canvas with a yellow. Some of the examples of other colours eg blue, red, seemed to be true. As I'm familiar with paint I don't necessarily need accurate colours in the book. Overall I'm pleased with the book.
