Iain MacLagan has been a reclusive widower since his wife Catalina died in childbirth. On her deathbed, she condemned him for putting her in that situation, and ever since, her words have haunted him. He has vowed never to marry again, realising that in this wish, he can never become a father, even though he desires children. By chance, one day, a 19 year old woman called Islaen MacRoth meets him alone with his thoughts. She is instantly drawn to him, despite an apparent scar down one side of his face, and he is 15 years her senior. Islaen has kept signs of her becoming a woman hidden, as her maid, Meg, told her she was like a cow, as she is petite, but with a large chest. So when Iain first sees her, he sees her only as a 'child.' Islaen is from a wealthy family, and her father believes it is time for her to be married. Two suitors appear, one who is older and twice widowed, and the other equally unsuitable. Both try to take advantage of Islaen, only seeing the wealth her marriage would bring, but Islaen is adament she wants Iain. Iain does not want to marry her, let alone anyone else. He is also being pursued by a man called MacLennon, who blames him for Catalina's death, not wanting to bring Islaen into the problem. But when the wedding is arranged, Iain tells Islaen he will only sleep with her if she prevents pregnancy, even though it's a sin. Islaen is horrified, but agrees, however, she has no intention of using any contraception. She believes if he sees her pregnant and give birth successfully, then he will relinquish his fears of her dying in labour.

The marriage has further problems from MacLennon, who now wants Islaen to die too, as well as Iain's past love, Lady Mary, now a widow since her wealthy husband died, now vowing to me Iain's wife instead.

Overall, it is a very good book. I give it 4.5/5, but Amazon doesn't allow half stars. Well recommended.

I loved it! There was action, danger and romance throughout. It was brilliantly written but some of the Scottish speech was hard to understand at points. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I enjoyed this story up untill the hero's old love (before his 1st marriage) reappears. And he has stirrings for her! I sorry but if I found my husband kissing (more making out) with another woman then escort her INTO her room, I would not forgive him just because he says he'd did not bed the woman especially with words of 'I couldn't do it' THEN procede to give my husband a special 'intimate' gift!!!
I'm sorry but utter rubbish!
This book was a right let down! It could have been much better, it spoke to me in no way and was actually difficult to finish read! I'm surprised actually because her books are so good!
Maybe a change of topic as the highlander series (while some are excellent) seems to be hitting a dry spot!
