3.0 out of 5 stars Aimed at pro's, for once !
This is a great book - it skips all the BS you get in most books that claim to be aimed a pros (how many "pro' books have i seen with seciton on 'what is a softbox?' or 'use your camera in M' - come on ! that not info for pro's) and cuts straight to the story of the shoot pre-production and the problems/challenges faced on that set.

Its very useful for...

This review is from: Location Lighting Solutions: Expert Professional Techniques for Artistic and Commercial Success (PDN Pro's) (Paperback)

Its very useful for commercial photographers seeking to learn more about working at a higher level or with a larger team / budget. Sometimes it gets a bit wrapped up in the "Scale" of these shoots - I've seen and shot similar image susing a lot less gear...... sometimes ;)
However, if you are looking to learn more about specific ideas this is a great book.

HOWEVER - sometimes the photogrpahers in the book get a bit 'sketchy' about the details and seem to conviently miss out some vital specifics or one part of thelighting diagram.... if you have experience of lighitng larger or complex sets, this isn't too hard to fill in the gaps, but for a book talking about location lighitng and giving specific exmaples greater transparency would be appreciated - if you dont want to share your secrets, don't agree to be interviewed or provide diagrams/ Despite this complaint, the book is useful for the location commercial / larger editorial market.

Word of warning - if you are 'strobist' or the kinda person who has 2 speedlights and makes DIY mods and moans on web forums about how you cant afford the gear pro's use, then this book will frustrate you. It really is aimed at people with a budget, lots of expensive portable lights and a team of assistants working on commercial shoots.

In summary, this book is good but very niche - I am pleased to see a book that caters for the more experienced photog looking for some insites into commercial work and the process behind the image.
