Excellent insight into how the Roman Empire functioned not only militarily but politically and economically. It is written in a way that makes it easy to understand and appreciate the complexity of Ancient Rome. It is one of my favourite books on Rome, well worth a read.

How very useful and thought provoking. This book is gives a very valuable insight into the thinking of the population of Ancient Rome. In particular its upper classes and its military are dealt with and gives us the reasons for the morale of the Roman military machine and its successes.
