This picture book is for a slightly older age group than the usual - it is aimed at a target audience of approx 6+. The story is set in pencil school (this is an American book, so it uses terms which may be unfamiliar, such as 'Principal' rather than Head for example) where the class are told to write a story. Little Red wants to write a story about bravery and her teacher gives her a basket of red words to help her out. So,the brave red pencil goes on a journey through the school and, along the way, she discovers verbs - to make her story more exciting - adjectives - which add description and also conjunctions and adverbs. Should she follow the story path? Is that really the Principal in the office?

This is obviously a twist on the story of Red Riding Hood, but it does help make clear some basic rules about story writing and, as such, is a great tool for children who want to write stories for themselves. It would be a fantastic book to read aloud to a Year 2/Year 3 class before embarking on writing a story, with lots of basic rules to follow and words which can help give your story extra excitement and description. A useful classroom tool, perhaps, rather than an enjoyable story in its own right, but a great encouragement to pick up a pencil and begin to write stories.

A super book for teachers to use with children in Key Stage 2 hoping to incorporate the teaching of grammar in a meaningful way, which has much more to do with the enjoyment of writing than with terminology. Super illustrations too. Be aware that one or two choices of vocabulary are American rather than British.
