This review is from: Art of Alex Gross (Hardcover)
Again, I first discovered Alex Gross's work throught the wonders of Youtube, and was on the lookout for a book of his collected works. With this volume, I am not disappointed - it is wonderful! As it reads on the back cover, difficult to categorise this artists work; he appears to draw inspiration from a variety of diverse sources, from pop art, pop surrealism by way of 50's sci-fi, traditional Oriental style, 40's glamour, fantasy, the macabre - a real cornucopia. His use of colour veers from the bright and primary, to the soft and pastel and then becomes almost translucent! Contained in here also are some beautifully rendered pencil drawings & sketches that complement his coloured plates exceptionally well. (There is an introduction by Bruce Sterling which, at the time of typing this, I haven't as yet read but will do; after all, I did buy this for the images first and foremost!!)
The book itself: the publishers - Chronicle Books, San Francisco - should be given a medal for the superb way that this volume has been put together - beautifully bound, the printing of the images is on a soft satin-y type of paper (sorry, don't know the technical term!)that is definitely pleasing on the eye and doesn't reflect light as much of the 'glossy' art books tend to do. The end-papers are very attractive and round off the volume very nicely.
As I have said in other reviews, if you hanker after this type of art, then this is a worthy edition indeed, and I for one, am d****d pleased I bought it!!! Nuff said!
