5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 20 July 2005

An excellent book, extremely interesting, absolutely loads of amazing pictures, fantastic (in both senses) artwork, good quality images, relevant blurb, fascinating and inspiring stuff. My 7 year old daughter loves it. Some of the images have such a wonderful quality, it's difficult to describe. Others are just downright amazing, compelling, thoughtful, stimulating. Great value for money also.

This brings together the first wave of the originators of beast that became pop surrealism. Glenn Barr, Shag, Pizz, Gary Baseman, Liz McGrath, Kathy Schorr, Joe Coleman, Tim Biskup and others all make a grand appearance along with the founder Robert Williams.

The imagery of the cartoon worlds belies its transcendental nature to connect between the worlds of 21st dream nightmares. These belie the cultural vapidity of modernism and then to relate it back to a magical realm of surreal modernity. It makes no statement about the world other than its mirror dystopia, the anti world of the cartoon imagery. Although this was based on violence this warps these Tex Avery Max Fleischer and Walt Disney dreamscapes to bring out an even greater sinister presence. Gone is the splapdash and in comes the spite, representing the perennial pubescence of the malevolent gaze.

Surf within the waves as it represents a higher realm than those who merely crawl within its shadows.
