5.0 out of 5 stars Knights of steel and fire.
A surprisingly detailed historical account of some very brave men. The combination of modern German panzer technology and tried servicemen with experience, guts and coolness under fire against overwhelming odds. The book leaves you to wonder what these soldiers could have achieved with sound leadership and adequate resources.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wittmann
Mr Agte reproduces heavily the German state propaganda of the time relating to Michael Wittmann , this should be borne in mind when reading his book.
The hard back is a larger format book , very well produced and heavily illustrated , again with many propaganda photos along side a huge number of private photographs which must have come from the Wittmann family ,...

5.0 out of 5 stars War, 8 Oct 2009
This review is from: Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WWII: v. 2 (Stackpole Military History) (Paperback)
A very interesting book with the inevitable ending for a proffessional soldier regardless of who he served with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed accounts of a WII german battalion's organisation, 28 Oct 2013

This review is from: Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WWII: v. 2 (Stackpole Military History) (Paperback)
This book is for those who have or would like to have a detailed understanding of how a tiger battalion worked. It is so detailed ,where every person is mentioned by name and rank constantly. It is not just about the fighting but all aspects of their organisation. It is more factual than a social history, so for some it may be a bit dry. If you are interested in Tigers in wwII this is a book for you.

This review is from: Michael Wittmann and the Waffen SS Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte in WWII: v. 2 (Stackpole Military History) (Paperback)
Mr Agte reproduces heavily the German state propaganda of the time relating to Michael Wittmann , this should be borne in mind when reading his book.
The hard back is a larger format book , very well produced and heavily illustrated , again with many propaganda photos along side a huge number of private photographs which must have come from the Wittmann family , these photos show Wittmann the family man ( although still in uniform).
The book covers not only Wittmann but the other tank commanders of his unit , it is a useful book but it is worth keeping Wittmann in the context of his times and not allowing any aspect of "hero worship" blinding the reader to legend and the influence of "Tiger phobia".

Is the hard back worth the money - I do doubt it , hugely expensive and the paperback would in the long run be more worth while.

Wittmann's grave will continue to be the most visited grave in Normandy but how many who visit think of the other men buried with him ?
A good book but one written with rose tinted glasses .

Wonderful detail but feels like the writing hasn't been checked so that same stories pop up several times over and again and the timeline seems a bit blurred.

A great book on the life of a great man in terrible times. Not only that, but a good historical reference book which certainly casts a new light on certain 'allied' version of events. History is always written by the victor they say; its nice to know that sometimes the defeated can often throw a spanner in the works too!
