The book is a must for Christian thinkers and those who practice oriental meditation. It is an excellent read, thoroughly absorbing; I could not put it down. If ever a being could have brought consolidation to zen and Christianity, then it might have been Merton. Alas, this syncretism has not yet happened, yet I can foresee it occurring in the future. The essay on Christian consciousness, and its present guise was absolutely superb. I fear it will be a long time until we see the like of Merton again. He certainly was an enlightened individual who was always Christian to the very heart.
