This review is from: Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (Hardcover)
In conjunction with the exhaustive biography by Eleanor Dwight this new publication gives us a chance to see what all the fuss was about. The magical story telling of many contemporary designers and the spell cast by catwalk and moving image inventions can be traced directly back to Vreeland.(See Tim Walker, Lucinda Chambers, Grace Coddington, etc) She imbued fashion with a real vitality which yes, reflected the 60's and 70's style revolutions but her creative flair was totally individual and had started long before her Vogue years.
At a time when the world is in danger of bland commercial statements (I am looking at Celine) it is good to be reminded that wild inventions in the manner of Poiret or Balenciaga (His clothes were never about compromise or commerciality even though he sold well at his peak and had a huge effect on fashion trends, this was never where his interest lay)are the life blood of fashion and style. Deanne had it to her fingertips and every pore of her body.
Magazines like Pop and Love often reference her wildest excesses with Verushka and others, showing how her influence transcends time. Grace Mirabella replaced Diana Vreeland at Vogue - I don't see a book of her layouts and ideas forthcoming? (Sorry Ms Mirabella Yes she increased the circulation but is that all fashion is about -figures? Of course we must make money, and if your clothes are so fantastic no one actually buys or wears them you are not really a successful designer. There MUST however be a happy medium and without the spellbinders and storytellers we are lost.
This is a book about an enchantress; if you have any interest in style, or want to know why she was great this is a "must buy"
