with a title like this, you think you know what you're getting - holocaust accounts, but not quite like you've ever read before because the viewpoint is exclusively female and the tone is both tragic and tenacious. at times in these succinct and powerful memoirs there's even a note of triumph amidst the appalling circumstances of life [and death] in the birkenau extermination camp. and because these are women's stories they are strong on small significant details as much as on the big emotions. i doubt if the hope-against-hope quality of these courageous victims would have been found anywhere in the men's quarters. read it.
