4.0 out of 5 stars A detailed book of his life, but not his work...
Having just barely finished the book, I was impressed by how much attention was given to both the earlier and latter parts of his life. Much of the details available (for free) online tend to gloss over the life of the young Tesla and only rarely go in to detail about his last years, and those are usually to attempt to denigrate the great man.

As others have...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read, but...
I don't see Seifer's appraisal as particularly objective, forgiving Tesla's follies rather too lightly whilst frequently extolling his virtues. Seifer fails to draw sufficient significance from Tesla's use of Mahlon Loomis's prior work, nor Ferraris's independent invention of multiphase motor/generator, at the same time as Tesla.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read, but..., 20 July 2011
This review is from: Wizard: Life and Times of Nikola Tesla (Citadel Press Book) (Paperback)

This book is not technical in any way. In the few 'technical' aspects of the book, Seifer could (and should) have used now long-established electrical & RF theory, but instead his technical descriptions are often as obtuse as those of his subject's writings.

Still, it's a biography, not a history, Seifer can interpret Tesla his way (which IMHO he does) and read as such it is nonetheless interesting and an insight into the times. Occasionally the language borders on arcane and sometimes the style is overly fussy. The connections between character traits and their reasons could have been spelled out more clearly. Perhaps Seifer chose not to join all the dots, to allow us to draw our own conclusions.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Electric Sorcerer, 11 Dec. 2012

This might be the saddest story ever told. It's told with none of the eloquence of The Man himself - in fact Seifer is positively ham-fisted [every new character has to have a breathless, potted bio in tow; the tale can jump in time, space and subject matter from one paragraph to the next; the climax is a mess of unstructured conspiracy theory]. And yet your heart goes out to this ascerbic Serb. A man so far ahead of his time that he was crushed by his time. If this is an everyday story of inventor-folk - plagiarised by peer scientists [household names like Edison and Marconi], robbed by financiers [JP Morgan, Astor] - then it's a minor miracle we've moved very far from the primordial soup. Lesser men than Tesla simply capitulated and jumped from the 13th floor [as Seifer recounts]. Where is the film of the book? Or the musical? When anyone, topically, asks 'who built that?', your best answer is probably, 'Tesla'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of his time, 23 Nov. 2013

This review is from: Wizard: Life and Times of Nikola Tesla (Citadel Press Book) (Paperback)
This over 400 pages bibliography of Nikola Tesla, plus more than 50 pages of notes and references, is at the same time both a fascinating and a sad book about the father of wireless and electrical transmission. Ahead of his time and a visionary, but riduculed and living on credit during the last years of his life, it was very hard for him to bear such a cruel fate given the importance of his inventions.
