This review is from: THE NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY - NIV - EXODUS - D K STUART: 2 (New American Commentary Old Testament) (Hardcover)
David J. Phillips, High Wycombe, England:
Doug Stuart has given us a good conservative Evangelical commentary on a crucial book of the Old Testament. The emphasis is on exegesis verse by verse based on the NIV printed in the text, but the author does not hesitate at various points to criticize this and give his alternative translation. His competence in Hebrew is clear. The style of the series aims to be accessible to wide readership of pastors, students and informed laymen, rather than scholars. Textual critical questions are dealt with briefly. The divine name was known to the patriarchs and the author suggests that Ex 6:3 should be read as a question expecting an affirmative answer. There are various excuruses at appropriate points in the text on such subjects as Holy War - by a volunteer army, unpaid and not rewarded, commanded only by God through a profit and not for empire building, Moses' shaft, Heart-hardening, Urim and Thummim, the Nile as a god, etc. Unfortunately these are not listed in the table of contents. The brief introduction gives a useful 9 point theology of exodus. Stuart accepts a 15th century date for the Exodus and Mosaic authorship. Sinai gives a clears statement of full monotheism and Israel is charged with being God's representative to the nations in four ways. One would have hoped for more information on ANE agriculture, social life and laws; also more of application to the reader's world. Peter Enns is better for this Exodus (NIV Application Commentary) However this is a good exegetical treatment of the text.

Not finished reading it yet, but what I have read appears well balanced theologically. It was bought after reading other reviewers comments and don't regret doing so. The authors style of writing is accessible and not unnecessarily academic. Recommended.
