4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive analysis of several major Wing Chun systems
There are a number of books on the market that claim to cover Wing Chun in such a way that one could learn from the book, or at least supplement your studies from the book (usually Yip Man Wing Chun, I find); some are good, some are bad. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not really "complete"
This was not what I expected - I misinterpreted the "Complete" part of the title. This book is merely a summary of the different styles of Wing Chun - their origins, beliefs etc. It is handy for the history buffs or anyone interested in exploring the different styles around. I have read it once and not likely to read it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive analysis of several major Wing Chun systems, 2 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Wing Chun (Tuttle Martial Arts) (Paperback)
There are a number of books on the market that claim to cover Wing Chun in such a way that one could learn from the book, or at least supplement your studies from the book (usually Yip Man Wing Chun, I find); some are good, some are bad. This is not one of them. This is essentially a well written presentation of research, detailing the contents of several major forms of Wing Chun; it covers their histories, development, forms, training techniques, concepts and key principles. It also contains a comprehnsive glossary of Wing Chun terms, and people and organisations involved with the history of Wing Chun. Illustrations are liberally placed throughout the book, illustrating the many diversities in movement and style between the different types of Wing Chun. This book is a worthy addition to any martial artists library, and students of Wing Chun will be fascinated to compare their own branch with the others discussed in the book. Note that this is a reference book rather than a novel; it's not a light read except for the most dedicated of students.

4.0 out of 5 stars Difinitive Examination Of Major Wing Chun Schools, 23 May 2000
This review is from: Complete Wing Chun (Tuttle Martial Arts) (Paperback)
This book gives the facts on all major schools of Wing Chun from Yip Man to Yan Kay Sat. It describes the forms, drills, weapons, principles and gives an overview of the system. It has some amazing revelations in the way other schools train i.e. some dont use chi sao, some dont use 1,2,3rd forms etc... at the back of the book if the wing chun lineage family tree and a conclusion by the writers about how they 'Believe' the system came to be (there may be some arguments here) all in all a very well researched book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to the History of Wing Chun, 2 Aug 2012
This review is from: Complete Wing Chun (Tuttle Martial Arts) (Paperback)
This book is a detailed and pretty comprehensive guide to the history of wing chun and its various styles. It is both well written and tries to avoid bias to any favoured style of the writers (though they obviously show somewhat more knowledge in these styles). Thankfully it also avoids the typical "Yip Man is the definitive/ultimate wing chun style" outcome that so many other people fall for.

A highly recommended read for anyone who wants to learn more about the history of wing chun from a variety of perspectives, offering a far more realistic/rounded approach than is usually offered from the instructors of any one style.

DISCLAIMER: Read the full title of the book! Do NOT expect it to be a guide to forms/applications etc. If that is what you are looking for, you will need to find something else!
