This review is from: Physicists (Paperback)
The theme of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play 'The Physicists’ is still a very hot topic today. It is nothing less than the role of science and the responsibility of the scientist in our world. As one of the main characters states, being a scientist has become a very dangerous job today. Knowledge could mean death.
This knowledge is heavily coveted by the money powers (the trusts) because they consider it to be indispensable in their aim to seize absolute power in world affairs.
The scientist, who gathered the most advanced knowledge in matter of physics, went hiding in an insane asylum because he didn’t want to be exploited by politicians. As he sees it, he would have had to publish his work, which would have resulted in a complete overhaul of the world of physics, and, in turn, in the collapse of the world’s economic system. For him, it was enough to say that he had visions of King Solomon to be put safely away in a lunatic asylum. For him, only there have scientists still the right to think.

But is this lunatic asylum really a safe place for a genius, who truly believes that it is his duty to disappear from the ‘normal’ world?
Who are the other two scientists who share his asylum? Why were nurse killed there? Why had female nurses to be replaced by male ones? Have the powers of darkness lost interest in his theories or have their control systems become much more sophisticated? And ultimately, who are the real fools on our planet?

Everybody should read or see this disturbing satirical play, which begins with apparently a simple criminal affair, but in fine leads to the crucial issue of the fate of our planet: life or death for mankind?
