4.0 out of 5 stars A handy collection of musical exercises for the piano.
I have just taken up piano lessons after a break of 30 plus years and this little book came highly recommended by my tutor. The piece l am practising is ideal for those budding pianists who need to improve the strength in their fingers whilst keeping their eye on the notes. Each exercise is enjoyable to play and the fingering is easy to follow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Smartly written pieces, but lack of guidance for a teacher.
This is a quite old work, so the pieces can be considered classical music. They are written in a very clever way which trains both note-reading, rhythm awareness and finger technique. It lacks in guidance for a teacher though. It takes quite some work on your own part to figure out what each exercise is good for and how to communicate this to your pupils. I personally use...

Brilliant book. I have been playing for around five years, and my teacher has been playing over 45 years and he loves it too. A good book to start with. Excellent buy.

It's a book that I used many years ago when I learned the piano. I loved it then (maybe in a minority at school!) and still love it. I'm trying to get my fingers supple enough to play again after about 50 years!!!

It lacks in guidance for a teacher though. It takes quite some work on your own part to figure out what each exercise is good for and how to communicate this to your pupils. I personally use it mainly as material for note-reading exercises.

A useful book of exercises although somewhat harder than I had envisaged for a beginner. I'll be working pretty hard to get through them with any skill.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for absolute beginners, 1 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Carl Czerny Practical Method For Beginners On The Pianoforte Op.599 P (Paperback)
My background: I know nothing about music (which makes me an absolute beginner). I bought this book to help me learn how to play piano.
Beware though! This book is not for absolute beginners but for beginners on PIANOFORTE. It supposes that you already know the music notation. If you don't, then this book is not for you. After you've learned that, then come to this book as it might be helpful exercise (and it's plenty of exercise in it).
If you are completely new to music, go for `It's never too late to play piano' by Pam Wedgwood. It's a brilliant method. That being said, you'll still have to work hard.
I've given it just one star NOT because it's not a good work, but because it's not for ABSOLUTE beginners.
