4.0 out of 5 stars A solid collection of pieces., 2 Oct 2003
This review is from: Blues Harmonica Collection (Paperback)
This is a collection of transcriptions of blues songs for the voice and harmonica from a variety of artists in musical notation with harp tab.
The printing is clear and the tablature fairly unambiguous, and there are some good songs in there.
It's also useful that full lyrics and melody are there (what can you do between harp licks but sing?) and I'm glad to see there are a couple of pieces for a harpman backing a singer too.
However, I'm cannot be sure of the accuracy of the pieces; very few of them match the recordings I have of the tunes featured. In most cases, this is probably because I have a different version from the one David McKelvy transcribed, but I can't check as he hasn't included any detail on the recordings he used.
I'd love to be able to give this 5 stars, but I just can't without knowing it's accurate. I'm probably being generous giving it 4, simply because there are so few books for us harp men out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good music poorly organised, 2 Jun 2009
This review is from: Blues Harmonica Collection (Paperback)
The musical work on this book has clearly been carefully done, distinguishing between bends of half/full/one-and-a-half steps.

What lets the book down is everything else - there's only a couple of pages describing the way the book works and a mere one page skimming over the nature and harmonica style of only four of the players tabbed.

More annoying is that there's very little to show which recording each songs has been tabbed from. I know Sonny Boy Williamson did very different recordings of some of his for different record labels, and it's likely the same is true of the likes of Howling Wolf and of Little Walter, who is presumably tabbed in the tracks where he supports Muddy Waters but it's not at all clear.
