Having bought this book at San Francisco airport before a long flight home, I had not heard of it. However, when I started reading I was hooked. This is a wonderful coming of age novel with more depth than many. Very insightful, it reads like a modern day 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. I often find the language irritates me when reading American novels but there was none of that here. A wonderful first novel by Laura Moriarty - I know I'll be looking out for more.

The authors style leads the reader in gently and though it is not action packed the story develops and the relationships absorb you so that you almost feel like your living with them. What I also liked is the recognition and identification of themes in my own life or any young adolescent, single parent, woman, mother etc.
