Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier Prelude: collects the two-issue adaptation of the first of Marvel's Captain America films - `The First Avenger', The Winter Soldier Infinite Comic #1, Captain America (1968 series) #117, Captain America (2005 series) #6, Ultimates #2, and the Iron Man story from Tales of Suspense #57 - featuring the first team-up of the Black Widow and Hawkeye. This is a mixed bag of writers and artists, but the non-film-related stories are by the top artists and writers of their respective days; and the film tie-ins are written by Peter David, who stands alongside the other creators in terms of stature.

`Captain America - The First Avenger' is a good adaptation of the film, and unlike most adaptations it actually works as a comic book story, and is not just a collection of scenes and dialogue taken from the film.

The Winter Soldier Infinite Comic #1 is a sort of `introduction' featuring Captain America, a SHIELD agent I've never heard of before, so I assume he's a character in the new film, and the Black Widow, who are stopping a terrorist attack in Chicago. The terrorists have stolen `Zodiac', a virus-weapon from SHIELD, who had previously denied its existence to Cap. He's not happy about this... I assume this is scene setting for the new film.

Tales of Suspense #57 (1964) - this Iron Man story features the origin of Hawkeye and his first meeting with the Black Widow in her spy days before she was upgraded to a costumed super-spy.

Captain America (1969) #117 sees an episode from a serial in which the Red Skull has used the Cosmic Cube to swap bodies with Captain America. The real Cap has been marooned on an island run by former Nazis, and he teams up with Sam Wilson, who ends the story as the Falcon.

Captain America (2005) #6 is the issue that begins the Winter Soldier storyline that returns Bucky Barnes to the Marvel universe.

Ultimates #2 sees Nick Fury setting up the Ultimates Initiative, drafting in Bruce Banner, Hank Pym and Jan Van Dyne to build superheroes for him, and sees the discovery of Captain America in his ice cube.
