4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining collection for younger readers, 8 April 2014

This review is from: Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble Volume 1: (Marvel Avengers Digest) (Paperback)
The stories from issues #1-4 of `Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble' are collected as Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble Volume 1: (Marvel Avengers Digest). Although intended for a younger audience than the `mainstream' Marvel Comics, the stories are not `written down' for the younger readers, and can be read by older readers with great pleasure. The style of artwork is heavily influenced by the animated cartoon series of the same name.

Issue #1 and #2 are adapted from the TV episode "The Avengers Protocol", in which the Red Skull sets out to steal Captain America's body and, with the help of MODOK, swap minds with the good Captain. Tony Stark was monitoring the ex-Avengers (the team had disbanded prior to this episode for some reason), and calls in the ex-teammates to rescue Captain America. In the ensuing fight, the Red Skull manages to take possession of the Iron Man suit and ejects Tony Stark from it. The second episode sees the Iron Skull and MODOK use nanobots to turn the Avengers against each other through mind-control. Stark, in a new suit, and with the new recruit Falcon, has to stop them...

Issue #3 sees the Avengers moving into Stark Tower and finding a horde of Space Phantoms - shape-changing extra-dimensional aliens start replacing them one by one, sending the Avengers into their parallel dimension, until only Iron man and the Falcon are left...

Issue #4 sees Ulik the Troll bringing a magic weapon to earth to attack Thor. Unfortunately he loses it, and Doctor Doom finds it. Unfortunately for everyone, the weapon summons the Midgard Serpent to destroy the Earth, and the only way to stop it is for Thor to sacrifice himself in battle. Iron Man has a different plan...
