This storyline runs through issues #521-527 of The Invincible Iron Man, collected as Invincible Iron Man Volume - 11: The Future. It is the finale of the Matt Fraction run on Iron Man, and brings the story to a satisfying close. It is six months on from the previous volume - Invincible Iron Man Volume 10: Long Way Down (Invincible Iron Man (Paperback Numbered)), when Stark gave up Extremis - and Tony Stark is now working in Mandarin City, building something for the Mandarin; Stark Resilient has been working on the Swarm, a nanite replacement for the Internet, the Detroit Steel Corps is being withdrawn from active service overseas, and General Babbage is sitting in his office holding his service revolver... and there's that new Iron Man at work, who happens to run into Rescue at an event. Now, we all know that the Mandarin is up to something, but Tony Stark also has a plan, and this storyline slowly reveals it, as we discover the secret of the Mandarin and his rings of power, and just what it is they are going to do. The giant robot squids are just the tip of the iceberg.

Stark: "I've had my moments welding scraps together in the caves of despots before..."

This is a finale that is worthy of the series, with guest stars galore, despicable villains, human ingenuity and cunning, big giant robots, and a second ending that takes place after the fighting is all over as Iron Man really does fly off into the sunset, and really does bring the story to a satisfying close.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fraction and Larroca Deliver!, 21 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Invincible Iron Man - Volume 11: The Future (Hardcover)
Tony Stark, his every work of the past year compromised by the Mandarin, returns to his roots, improvising superweapons from scraps and parleying enemies into allies. In a shocking parallel to Stark's predicament, the Mandarin too is seen to be...

...actually, this volume is so tightly plotted that it's very difficult to inform without spoilers. I could throw adjectives at you- superb, exciting, challenging, shocking- but "satisfying" is the best. Fraction delivers, pulling together all the elements of the "Invincible" web into a rip-roaring finale. Everything from Stark's "reboot", through the introduction of Rescue and Resilient, the machinations of Stane and the Hammers, and the deepening shadow of the Mandarin, find a resolution here. Fraction's achievement is comparable in every way to Hickman's work with the Fantastic Four/Future Foundation. And Larroca continues to shine, offering stills from God's camera throughout action and intimate scene alike.

Please excuse the blasphemy.

It's been a great ride. Than you indeed, Mr. Fraction. MORE!
