This review is from: Essential Silver Surfer Volume 2 TPB: v. 2 (Paperback)
Collected here is a decade of tales involving the Silver Surfer from 1980 to 1990.
The starter is a brief, but beautifully illustrated, stand-alone tale from Stan Lee and John Buscema where the Surfer goes beyond the known universe to try and find the secret.
After many years of trying to break through the barrier Galactus had placed around the Earth, the Fantastic Four help the Surfer break free (twice) no longer bound to our planet the Surfer's adventures take on a far broader sweep.
The Surfer's arch-nemesis, Mephisto, puts in a nice first appearance as the Surfer's relationship with Shalla-Bal is shattered once more. From thereon in it's rapid-fire as Champion and the other Elders of the Universe (including the Collector, Grand Master and Ego the Living Planet) appear, there's the start of a new Kree-Skrull war, the Super-Skrull returns as does Ronan The Accuser, the High Evolutionary and the Eternals. The fight between Galactus and The Elders featuring Galactus and the In-Betweener memorably scrapping it out over a black hole as Chaos and Order wait, then the re-appearance of Mangog.
Unlike the first run the Surfer now has a series of romantic relationships, at first with Shalla Bal, then ex-Avenger Mantis and finally Galactus' new herald Nova. We also get an insight into the history of Galactus, even his relationship with Eternity and Death.
It's a good collection, well written tales by Stan Lee and Steve Engelhart, but not quite a 5 star volume. As with the first volume, there's lots of thoughtful insight here into the Surfer's unique alien "identity" and the Surfer even gets a catch-phrase "Nebulae Unfolding", well it just had to happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential silver surfer, 5 Mar 2010
This review is from: Essential Silver Surfer Volume 2 TPB: v. 2 (Paperback)
as a long time collector it was refreshing to re-read some of these classic tales - those of you who haven't read these before really should as it will give added depth to the character who was only shallowly portrayed in the FF movie..take this chance to read why the Silver Surfer is one of Stan (the man)Lee's favourite characters...
