5.0 out of 5 stars Better than any action movie., 21 May 2008
By
Jaffacase (Newcastle, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Punisher Max Volume 3: Mother Russia TPB: Mother Russia v. 3 (Graphic Novel Pb) (Paperback)
Garth Ennis presents the Punisher as he is meant to be. This comic, and this volume (Vol.3 Mother Russia) in particular, is very cinematic. It's like watching an action movie, but only better. It contains a wit, heart, and some sensibilities that hollywood action movies rarely posses. And it goes further with the action and violence than any movie could. When you read the interpretations of the Punisher and Nick Fury in this series, they are so hard boiled it's difficult to imagine they exist in the Marvel Universe.

Garth Ennis' knack for putting the Punisher in near impossible situations, then having him pull through in a sometimes more impossible manner, makes for a thrilling read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got a suicide mission? Think Frank Castle, 23 May 2011

This review is from: Punisher Max Volume 3: Mother Russia TPB: Mother Russia v. 3 (Graphic Novel Pb) (Paperback)
A girl with a deadly virus in her blood which could be used by the Russians to wipe out the Western world is being held in an underground nuclear silo and it's up to the Punisher to go in, get the girl, and get out.

Garth Ennis has come up with an excellent, action-packed story for Castle to get involved in. The book ticks over nicely and the scenes speed up as things go from bad to worse and Castle is backed into a corner.

It's a gripping read with plenty of bloodshed, some cool action including a souped-up ninja hobbit. The artwork is good and Dougie Braithwaite brings the gore and chaos to life for the reader.

An excellent continuation of this brilliant series, and one of the best Punisher books out there. Garth Ennis scores again.

5.0 out of 5 stars one man army versus an army, 14 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Punisher Max Volume 3: Mother Russia TPB: Mother Russia v. 3 (Graphic Novel Pb) (Paperback)
lets just get one thing straight, Garth Ennis's run on the MAX punisher series from vol 1-10 are up there with alan moore and millers best. All of the volumes are action packed but this one goes beyond.
Ennis has pulled of something remarkable with the puinsher, you feel truly afraid of what he might do to "puinsh" others. The punisher has no remorse or doubt to his actions , this isn't a anti-hero you cheer on even though he can do some noble acts. His code is so strict and serve you fear for his sanity.
Mother russia is probaly the most linear action packed story in the run (aside from BARRACUDA).Without giving away too much story, the punisher is recruited by nick fury for a high risk mission. It has to be the slickest black ops tale i ever read ,seen or imagined and gun fights drawn so well you feel the victims pain.
Why hasn't it been made into a film you ask?, Hollywood could never be this good.

There is no dip in quality when it comes to this series. This has been my favourite story so far, it's just endless action amid great story telling and beautiful art work. Buy it, read it, love it, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best titles Marvel have, 6 Jan. 2008

This really is a top, top read, and Garth Ennis just seems to get better and better. Not only do we get to see Frank Castle in his unedited best, Ennis' portrayal of Nick Fury is everything you ever wanted. I was a little dissapointed by the first two collections, but i'm really pleased i took a risk on this. The story is brilliantly drawn out and feels perfectly resolved. One of the best titles Marvel have and one for everybody, as long as there of age and of a strong disposition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slaughterhouse!, 31 July 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Punisher Max Volume 3: Mother Russia TPB: Mother Russia v. 3 (Graphic Novel Pb) (Paperback)
Moving the Punisher series to MAX was a masterstroke. Finally, we get to read about Frank's adventures the way they were meant to be read. Dark, gritty, and sometimes disturbing, this is an excellent example of how a comic book should read.
Also worth noting, is the strange relationship between Frank, and the small child he is sent to rescue. As with "Born", "Mother Russia" again offers a very teasing insight to this bleak, psychotic rage that drives Frank. Hopefully, as the series goes on, this darkness inside him will be explored further, to a satisfying conclusion.
All in all, a very worthwhile read if you're a fan of The Punisher. Only four stars however, because Frank spends large parts of the book in Military issue kit, and not enough time in the usual Punisher gear. Still. A minor quibble. You've read this far? Go order it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Garth Ennis should write the Punisher for evermore, 21 Mar. 2008

This is Die Hard with Russian nuclear weapons. The action is more intense than any comic book I've read. The story is ludicrous but very gripping. The characters are much deeper than you would expect. And Nick Fury is very cool and very funny.

My only quibble is that the covers make The Punisher look a little douchey. They could rock a little harder. Other than that, this thing is awesome. And from here the series just gets better and better.
