4.0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to security, 8 Mar 2002

I really like the style of practical advice in this book. I read it over the course of about two months on and off and really enjoyed the friendly but authoritive advice.
It has good examples of situations where the tools described are nescessary and a lot of practical recommendations about configuration. For example there are a couple of occaisions where the author suggests not using compilation flags on source.
The one critiscism I have is that the book is very Red Hat/RPM distro based. The author tells you where to find the package then shows how to install the package. The bug-bear is that the command for a lot of the packages is rpm -i <package_name>, which ends up being redundant after a while. If you're using a non-RPM distro like debian or LFS this will really annoy you.
Overall a worthy addition to the SA's library, especially if you're a beginner who needs some practical advice. The ability to dip in and out of the book nearly made it a five star rating but the RPM thing just grated a little too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Security you wish you had, 18 Sep 2001

This review is from: Linux Security (Craig Hunt Linux Library) (Paperback)
I thought i knew about systems security until i read this book. It has opened my eyes to some of the more obscure forms of attack, and has helped my nail down those holes on the servers in my care. The opening chapter is realy helpful to those taking on a bigger role in their orginisation. It is well written and gets straight to the point, good knowledge is needed for you to get the most from this book. It has been written for sysadmin's everywhere. Thankyou Ramon and Craig.

The Craig Hunt library range for Linux is exceptional and in a league of it's own. After owning around 20 Linux books, including certification level, this one range stands out as head and shoulders above any other publisher.

Currently I have four different books from Craig Hunt, and all are the "go to" book for that subject - and all give effortless expertise.

They are written so that you get the concept first time every-time. Outstanding. Look at the reviews on Amazon for the library.. and you'll see they're stunning. If you're considering Certification they will give you a high level background understanding, which other books just can't seem to manage to do.

Nothing else compares to them - so I'm collecting the entire range - which is the sign of a happy bunny. :)
