a nice clear book with good guidance as to conversational structure which should help to build a comprehendable dialogue when needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference source of up-to-date expressions; not for linguists
This book is NOT a standard dictionary. It is rather a glossary. Anyway, major part of the book is the phrasebook as its title reads. The strongest point of this book is that it contains really up-to-date and useful vocabulary and basic phrases in 33 thematic chapters (incl. topics such as "Relief Aid" and "War"). Howeever, it lacks inputs in Arabic script (both sides)...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference source of up-to-date expressions; not for linguists, 18 Aug 2010
This review is from: Pashto-English/English-Pashto Dictionary and Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
Howeever, it lacks inputs in Arabic script (both sides) and - what I find more serious - basic linguistic description of all inputs such as gender at nouns, their (ir)regular plurals/ obl. cases and present/ past stems of verbs. It is an easy to use booklet even for absolute beginners and non-linguists. Advanced learners and experts might be rather disappointed, however the book is a good reference source of up-to-date expressions: that is not a matter of course with other Pashto dictionaries.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pashto text not written in Pashto, 6 Nov 2007

Thats a big bummer. You should make it very clear that Pashto text is not written in Pashto. I was expecting to use this dictionary for translation of a bunch of software to Pashto and in turn improve my (especially reading and writing capabilities of) Pashto and this one problem in this dictionary makes that task much harder for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pashto / English, 20 July 2011
This review is from: Pashto-English/English-Pashto Dictionary and Phrasebook (Hippocrene Dictionary & Phrasebooks) (Paperback)
Okay but quite hard to get around some of the pronounciations as it is generally not a phoenetic book (unlike the aurhor's Dari book) and can be hard to get the exact pronounciations right without help!
Talking to Pastuns using this book could leave you embarrased as some expressions just aren't used!
The book is probably too technical and not enough 'street' pasto, an example....one of the most important expressions 'how are you?' (Sangay-ee) isn't even in the book. Strange.

This is what I wanted with the phrases and you can practice saying the words to your friends and they laugh but correct you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite a dictionary but good for low level, 9 July 2011

This is, as other reviewers have pointed out, not for linguists. At a lower level it is great. I teach low level Pashto using Romanised transliterations and this is great for my students to either learn additional phrases rote or to gain additional vocabulary with which to construct simple sentances. Sure it would benefit from having script or more grammatical information but it is a cheap and simple book which gives beginners extra words with which to cobble together more or less correct sentences. A title of 'Phrasebook and Vocabulary List' might have been a bit more honest since the word 'Dictionary' implies that not only will there be a pretty comprehensive list of words but also that each entry will have a bit more information than this book provides.
