4.0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Suspense Columbo
Anne Stuart specialises in Tall, Dark,& Anti heroes. What I absolutely loved about this novel is that it reads as the romantic suspense version of a Columbo film. Don't let the fact that we know more or less from the start Whodunnit put you off. It's a taut & exciting read, even if you can't quite credit the fact, that...

1.0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
I have followed Anne Stuart for a long time from her historical works to the more contemporary novels & I have to say that I was very disappointed with this & can say that the best part of this was the cover! This book was completely flat & in figuring out the reason I can put it down to the fact that the story does not have any intrigue or suspense. As one of the...

As one of the previous reviewers mentioned - you know at the beginning who the culprit is. You wonder though why the author decided to do that early on & then as you read on - you realise why!! She needed a reason to explain the "sick" mind of the evilness that pored out of the serial killer. By revealing who it is though the characters around the plot were almost like dummies without any element of shock/surprise.

Rachel wants security in her life for her daughter & so marries David Middleton & settles in Silver Falls just after her daughter's best friend gets murdered. What she does not realise is that she had been set up with the sole purpose that her new husband just wants to get legal guardianship of her daughter. His other motive is that he wants to frame his adopted brother & for years he has been on a killing spree following his brother around.

Enter Caleb Middleton who now realises what his brother is & has done. As soon as he arrives there are a couple of serial killings, he realises the reasons behind David's actions, likes & falls for his brother's wife & so turns on his macho hero role as he wants to save them before they become victims. The hero is tolerable but the most annoying person is Rachel who does not realise what her husband is. She is always the sacrificial lamb with him & she reasons away a lot of his behaviour. Upon realising what she has been harbouring there is no true revulsion expressed by her - this portrays her as a truely shallow character. How Caleb fell for her I do not know, just the fact that she had put up with his brother was enough to have put him off.

Really sorry that I do not agree with the previous two & as i know the quality that AS can produce- by her own standards this is a really poor attempt at a romantic suspense. What was the point when you knew at the beginning & the rest of the story was an explanantion & reasoning as to why he had done what he had in the first place. This part was superficial as well as there was not a solid explanation such as a bad up-bringing by the mother etc.

Very mixed story line & I know that AS is capable of a lot better- saving grace is that its well written BUT if there is not a supporting sound plot - there is no point!! Avoid if you can but please pick up AS Historical novels - at this she is a master story teller!

Don't let the fact that we know more or less from the start Whodunnit put you off. It's a taut & exciting read, even if you can't quite credit the fact, that the - supposedly - intelligent heroine, hasn't twigged what's occuring.....and has a few TSTL moments throughout the book !!! Hence the 4 stars only

Been a fan of Anne Stuart for a long time and have read all of her books. My only complaint previously was that the heroines didn't have much of a backbone however this changes in this novel. The hero is less dark too which appeals to me. Anne Stuart fans will love it and anyone who hasn't read Anne should start with this one. It's good, romantic suspense thriller in the vein of 'did he, didn't he?'

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit weird, 15 Feb 2013

My least favourite Anne Stuart. I just found it odd and did not really warm to the characters (apart from the daughter).
