5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, wonderful book (100 stars! :) )
I'm sorry, but I have to say something. How can ANYONE give this book less than five stars?...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good read but didn't like the ending
I didn't like the way in which the 'suspense' leading to the inevitable ending is drawn out and then rrsolved too suddenly without sufficient explanation.

I'm sorry, but I have to say something. How can ANYONE give this book less than five stars?...
Emily Climbs is a great book. It is one of those rare books that gets better each time you read it, because there are so many things you notice and appreciate. People should be aware that there is no sex, no guns, no Jerry Springer-style shenanigans here....that is the beauty of this book. The heroine, Emily Starr, is a spirited, independent orphan girl who has dreams of becoming a famous writer and poetess. This book follows her life from age fourteen to eighteen -- her friendships, loves, and the gradual fulfillments of her ambitions. Emily is not a 'normal' girl by 19th century standards -- she is stifled by the restrictions of her time. Yet she rises above it. Comparisons with Anne are inevitable, but Emily has what a previous reviewer called 'bite'. L.M.Montgomery has put a lot of her own soul into Emily -- the result is a book which is not only inspiring and uplifting but also very, very funny. Montgomery is at her best in this book -- her umimitable style has never worked better than it has with Emily. A lot of risks are taken with Emily that would not have worked with Anne. What the reader is left with is an unforgettable character, and an unforgettable book. There is a purity and clearness in this book that makes it such a joy to read. You have a developing love story that is engrossing and beautiful, but without a trace of smut or cheapness. You have a heroine who, in a time of conformity chooses her own path in life and tries to remain true to her ideals. How many books have this nowadays? Hardly any. I guarantee you this -- if you choose to read this book, you will not forget it in a hurry...it will remain as fresh and wonderful on it's 50th reading as it was on it's 1st. So read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The attraction of Anne with a little more bite, 16 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I enjoy Emily very, very much. She does the sort of funny, daring things that suit her, without worrying about pleasing anyone else, save her concience. She has a certain tang that makes her very enjoyable to read about. Emily isin't for everyone, but is highly reccomendable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emily of New Moon, 21 Dec 2009
A Kid's Review
Read it! Read it! Read it!

Emily Climbs is one of the best books I have ever read. The whole trilogy are amazing but this one is my favourite. It is a beautiful tale about a orphan girl who longs to be an author. I can identify with Emily so much. Reading it was like reading about myself. I cannot describe how much I love this book. I could - and will - read it over and over again. This is Montgomery at her best and a great book for any of her fans.

Alison, age 12.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Anne!, 15 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This book is slow moving and doesn't contain the pace of the Anne books, but Emily is more alive in my imagination! Emily's character is written with much more depth than Anne, and the book is inspiring as you see the world through this dreamer's eyes. It inspires you to write and get out there and dream. Love it, love it, love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book deserves more than 5 stars!, 14 Jun 1999

I can't believe anyone would give this wonderful masterpiece in literature less than 5 stars! Are they blind or what? They don't get better than this book, which is full of joy but also horror and some dark emotions. But this book, which plays with the reader's emotions, is one that I highly recommend to anyone who loves good reading. READ THIS, AND RE-READ IT, I promise that you won't ever be sorry or disapointed. :)

I enjoyed the whole series of these books. How a young girl loses her father, ends up with her maiden aunts. To cope with her grief she writes letters[Emily of New Moon]. This book show how she climbs through life, making some mistakes, but as with all L.M.Montgomery's book's all's well in the end.She writes in such a way ,that it is clean and beautiful, this is a book I read over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked the Anne books, get this!, 26 April 1998

This is a great book about Emily Starr, a young woman who loves to write. She wants to go to a school away with her friends. But her Aunt Elizabeth won't let her unless she promises to give up writing 'anything untrue' while she's there. This book tells about how Emily put up with Aunt Ruth, the person she's being forced to board with. This book touches your funny bone!
