This review is from: Punishment & Social Structure (Ppr) (Law & Society) (Paperback)
I am doing a degree in criminology and this book sparked my topic area for my dissertation. In summary the book says that punishment is based upon the needs of the labour market. So for example when we were colonising Australia criminals were put at oarsman, and then when we settled we needed builders etc...In the industrial revolution we needed factory workers to offenders would carry out mundane tasks so upon release could easily get work. It can be seen as dated now but with the recession there can be discussion that there is no gap in the labour market to make reflections in the way we punish - hence the more educational route being taken.
Anyway I chose to buy this over borrowing from a library as it such a ground breaking piece in my area of interest and a great reference point.
