5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding end to an impeccable series, 14 Sep 2003
"Shadowsinger" is the fifth and final installment in L.E. Modesitt Jr.'s "Spellsong Cycle". This series has mainly focused on the exploits and legacy of one woman, Anna Marshall, a talented singer/musician who is taken from Earth to the world of Liedwahr, where her voice endows her with the magical art of Spellsong. From then on she not only becomes the most powerful sorceress in existence, but the regent of an underling nation which she eventually moulds into the leading one. The last book saw the death of Lady Anna and the rise of her principal foster daughter, Secca, to the position of Head Sorceress. Since then Secca has been faced with numerous challenges, the largest of which occurs in this last tale, where she must use all the magic and resources at her disposal, in order to save her people from the would-be conquering forces of the Sturinnese. But will Secca be able to find the power and the cold will to use it, to finally bring about a true chance for peace to the world?
This is a stunning conclusion to Modesitt's feminist fantasy saga, which throughout has raised many social and ethical themes without being overbearing. His general writing is flawless, his description of the physical world amazingly realistic and the relationships between characters (both political and personal) are extremely intriguing. With these things alone he has created a masterpiece, but when mixed with his original and exciting fantasy elements, you end up with a truly wonderous story. As you can tell, I liked this book quite a bit and would recommend it highly (well, the whole series infact) to anyone, even those who have not had a big interest in sword and sorcery before. Please read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliantly written, as good as the rest, 23 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Having enjoyed all the books in this series i could not wait to read this and really enjoyed it.
As good as the others. The transition from the first trilogy to this one has been seemless, and the intoduction of a host of new characters has been carried of well. The story adds depth to the characters, and the plot....well lets just say it's good!!! i dont want to spoil anything!!!
if you loved the first four you will love this!

Arrived on time, was in very good condition. Was bought as a present; recipient very happy with it, as it seems to be rather difficult to get this author's books in the UK without having to order them from the bookshop. Take out the middleman and you've got amazon! =)
