4.0 out of 5 stars Clear and thought-provoking, 21 May 2002

This review is from: Doing Critical Management Research (SAGE series in Management Research) (Paperback)
Alvesson and Deetz provide a clear and thorough explanation of critical theory and research in the social sciences, often in comparison to the postmodern approach. Not surprisingly, it includes a strong and well-reasoned critique of the classic positivist scientific method applied to human interaction.
While the book focuses considerably on the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of research, it also offers practical guidelines for researchers in the real world.
Most of all, I found it worthwhile reading because it obliges the reader to consider a variety of viewpoints, and seriously reflect on the "why" behind any research project. I strongly recommend it for anyone involved in empirical work in the social sciences.

This review is from: Doing Critical Management Research (SAGE series in Management Research) (Paperback)
This book is in the same series as Management Research by Easterby-Smith, Thorpe and Lowe. This latter book was recommended on my MA degree. The reviewed book has much more information regarding aspects of critical research and I would recommend it.
